Daniel’s life in the southern Brazilian city of Curitiba is disintegrating – he’s on a charge and suspended from work for assaulting a fellow policeman and burdened with caring for his aged and non-speaking father, an ex-military man who treats him with cold disdain. Plus, he can’t get his head around the fact that his sister has fallen in love with a woman. The only ray of sunshine is his online relationship with ‘Sara’ to whom he feels very close but who suddenly stops returning his messages. Dropping everything he sets out on a trek up north to find Sara, only to discover a situation more challenging than anything he has left behind. Brazil’s Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film 2022 boasts nuanced performances, breath-taking vistas and a compelling, multi-layered narrative which transcends its road movie trappings to entangle us in dilemmas of identity and destiny.
