Tom Medina (David Murgia), an enigmatic petty criminal, is sent by a juvenile court to work on a farm in France’s beautiful and mysterious Camargue. Dreaming of going to Spain to work with bulls, he becomes an apprentice to a wise horse-wrangler called Ulysse (Slimane Dazi) and tries to emerge from his troublesome past. In that quest, he is hindered by local hostility, but helped by an uneasy friendship with Ulysse’s rock singer daughter (French-German performer Karoline Rose) and a tricky romance with Suzanne (Suzanne Aubert), a fellow outcast who sells herbs outside a church. French-Algerian director Gatlif is part-Romani and has made a specialism of championing that culture. This intriguing feature also benefits from a glorious soundtrack, an intense involvement with the region’s extraordinary wildlife and Camargue’s peculiar electromagnetic geology.
